A number of people have contacted us saying they feel helpless about all of this. As the site and organization matures we want this section to become increasingly relevant to individuals so that they can quickly determine what they can do to help be part of the solution. Better yet we want them to be more aware so they can make sure they aren't part of the problem AND be part of the solution. "How To Talk To A Climate Skeptic"
is a blog published by the Grist Mill and is a great compilation of
talking points. These can help anyone who is preparing to get in front
of audiences at any level. We encourage everyone to become familiar
with these talking points. At the same time, and quite possibly duplicitous on our part, we offer some challenges that are definitely first of a kind in nature. (e.g. they've never been done by anyone anywhere). However, we think they can be solved with some inventive engineering and available technologies. We hope that these too will inspire everyone to push their own envelopes of exploration to see what they can achieve. This section is really dedicated to independant action vs participatory action.
As a general rule very complex problems easily intimidate or discourage people not familiar with sophisticated project management efforts that take a long time to implement. Why? Because there are a vast number of steps needing to be executed and the resolution is somewhere in the perceived distant future. People can find it hard to visualize victory through the forest of issues needing to be solved. The good news here is the management team of H2Orbit is skilled in these types of projects and understands the talent required. We don't want to get into a very long dissertation here but H2Orbit presents a strategic view of the solutions; a present view of the current situation, issues, and challenges. Tactical objectives and goals need to be set to build the bridge from our present to the future. There is much work yet to be completed. We know we can because the plans and fundamental technologies have been around for decades. What has been missing in all of this is the proper motivation to execute those plans. Until recently the evidence for global warming and other issues was not present. Some in fact still disagree. We can't wait for them to see the light in order to begin resolving the problems. See out situation to understand why. H2Orbit contends that we cannot afford to be wrong and our strategic plan must consider the cost of failure not only of individual phase steps and tasks but of the strategic goal itself. What happens in a worst case scenario. We need to know this to a) provide the proper motivation and b) what actions are necessary to assure success. Not only is the evidence mounting - its becoming very clear that there is a brick wall we are going to hit if we don't solve those problems. That too is becoming increasingly clear as time goes on. What is also very clear is that the tactical components required take some 20-30 years to implement once those specific stages are begun. That means we have an ever narrowing window of time in which action will lead to our victory over this situation. That revelation was the genesis for H2Orbit. That revelation is the source of our urgency. A few points:
We will also caution students not to get to overwhelmed with unexplained data. Make note of your questions. Be skeptics. Seek out teachers to help explain the phenomena you don't understand. Teachers, invite professors from local colleges to help explain complex phenomena. Time to act is now. We believe we must have the problems solved, past tense, within 100 years. That doesn't mean start working on the problems. It means we have to have them completely resolved within that time frame. That means we have a massive amount of work to do. What are you waiting for? So objectives and goals need to be set at attainable levels within the scope of individual ability to execute the tactics. In this way individuals will know they are helping, gain satisfaction from being able to attain that particular objective or goal and then can apply what they learned from that experience and share it with others. Using advanced problem solving methodologies we (collective we) can maximize our individual learning and turn that into societal knowledge, using knowledge management, and engaging others around the world in an effort for them to not make our mistakes. (Now re-read that previous sentence and imagine you are someone else on the other side of the planet.) As activity percolates towards the strategic vision - the problems will be solved. Challenges will be met and overcome. Every objective met and goal attained will increase the resilience of the people. That will engender hope and drive resolve. Resolve will spread hope and that will instill confidence. Right now - just know we can do this but action and work is required. We can get this done - with your help. The human spirit will prevail. Earth's biosphere will be sustainable. We encourage people to use the feedback form. Tell us how you feel - what you need - what you're thinking. We will endeavor to provide pointers to existing resources on the network and if we can't find them out there already we'll try to make them available here if we can. If we can't we'll add them to our wish list and as donations come in we'll secure them for everyone's use. Young people, of all ages, need to know that we CAN solve this problem. If you are a teacher or parent make sure you are familiar the solution so you can help guide the kids in their learning and experiences. Humans learn by doing. So the best learning environment is to lead by example. One thing everyone can do - right now - is to simply contact people you know and have them review this site. Especially if they are in other schools or neighborhoods. This area of the web site will endeavor to have one page targeted at different audiences, to increase the relevance of the subject matter for them. If you have suggestions, use the feedback form. We can't fix something if we are not aware its broken. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
