Obviously the site covers a large array of topics and if this section were comprehensive in its implementation would overwhelm the site in its own right.  So the intent here is NOT to provide a comprehensive set of reading references but to provide a key set.  Those thought to provide a good foundation for various aspects as they relate to the H2Orbit mission.  Some links/references may be to specific items and others may be to search engines on topical subjects.

We have tried to focus the Bibliography on hard copy references that are available through independent sources.  Reference material that is available electronically via the Internet, for the most part, will be listed on the Links page.  One critical example of this is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2001 Assessment Report.

Many book sellers, like Amazon, offer end-user, comment areas for any given book.  We encourage H2Orbit users to provide their thoughts about a text on those systems, rather than here.  Consequently we are not at the moment intending to install a blog or forum to discuss texts, as it already exists on those other systems.

We have posted lists of materials available on Amazon:

Aviation and the Global AtmosphereIntergovernmental Panel on Climate ChangeClick the image to review the reportThis Special Report was prepared following a request from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. The state of understanding of the relevant science of the atmosphere, aviation technology, and socio-economic issues associated with mitigation options is assessed and reported for both subsonic and supersonic fleets. The potential effects that aviation has had in the past and may have in the future on both stratospheric ozone depletion and global climate change are covered; environmental impacts of aviation at the local scale, however, are not addressed. The report synthesizes the findings to identify and characterize options for mitigating future impacts.

Emissions Scenarios
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate ChangeClick the image to review the reportIn 1992 the IPCC released emission scenarios to be used for driving global circulation models to develop climate change scenarios. The so-called IS92 scenarios were pathbreaking. They were the first global scenarios to provide estimates for the full suite of greenhouse gases. Much has changed since then in our understanding of possible future greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Therefore the IPCC decided in 1996 to develop a new set of emissions scenarios which will provide input to the IPCC third assessment report but can be of broader use than the IS92 scenarios. The new scenarios provide also input for evaluating climatic and environmental consequences of future greenhouse gas emissions and for assessing alternative mitigation and adaptation strategies. They include improved emission baselines and latest information on economic restructuring throughout the world, examine different rates and trends in technological change and expand the range of different economic-development pathways, including narrowing of the income gap between developed and developing countries. To achieve this a new approach was adopted to take into account a wide range of scientific perspectives, and interactions between regions and sectors. Through the so-called "open process" input and feedback from a community of experts much broader than the writing team were solicited. The results of this work show that different social, economic and technological developments have a strong impact on emission trends, without assuming explicit climate policy interventions. The new scenarios provide also important insights about the interlinkages between environmental quality and development choices and will certainly be a useful tool for experts and decision makers.

Interplanetary Internet (IPN): Architectural DefinitionV. Cerf, S. Burleigh, A. Hooke, L. Torgerson, R. Durst, K. Scott, E. Travis, H. WeissInterPlaNetThis document describes the Interplanetary Internet: a communication
system to provide Internet-like services across interplanetary
distances in support of deep space exploration. Our approach, which
we refer to as bundling, builds a store-and-forward overlay network
above the transport layers of underlying networks. Bundling uses
many of the techniques of electronic mail, but is directed toward
interprocess communication, and is designed to operate in
environments that have very long speed-of-light delays. We partition
the Interplanetary Internet into IPN Regions, and discuss the
implications that this has on naming and routing. We discuss the way
that bundling establishes dialogs across intermittently connected
internets, and go on to discuss the types of bundle nodes that exist
in the interplanetary internet, followed by a discussion of security
in the IPN, a discussion of the IPN backbone network, and a
discussion of remote deployed internets.

Leading at the Edge of Chaos: How to Create the Nimble OrganizationDaryl R. Conner0471295574

Paperback version
Globalization, rapid-fire technological innovation, and mounting pressure for shareholder value have pushed the markets into a state of ceaseless turmoil. What was cutting-edge change management theory just five years ago now seems naive. Success amidst such a maelstrom of change calls for much more than what change management models have to offer. It calls for a radically new kind of organization, nimble enough to adapt instantly to changing market conditions, and piloted by leaders versed in the art of Leading at the Edge of Chaos.

Methodological and Technological Issues in Technology TransferIntergovernmental Panel on Climate ChangeClick the image to review the report This Special Report has been prepared by IPCC Working Group III in response to a request by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) to the UNFCC. Innovation and enhanced efforts to transfer environmentally sound tech-nology to limit greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to climate change will be required to meet the objective of the Climate Convention and to reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts. The report addresses the technology transfer problem in the con-text of climate change while emphasizing the sustainable devel-opment perspective. Technology transfer is defined as the broad set of processes covering the flows of know-how, experience and equipment and is the result of many day-to-day decisions of the different stakeholders involved. A number of social, economic, political, legal, and technological factors influence the flow and quality of technology transfer. Essential elements of successful transfers include consumer and business awareness, access to information, availability of a wide range of technical, business, management and regulatory skills locally, and sound economic policy and regulatory frameworks. Technology transfers that meet local needs and priorities are more likely to be successful. But there is no pre-set answer to enhancing technology transfer. Interactions and barriers vary according to sector, type of tech-nology and country, and recent trends in international financial flows that drive technology transfer are altering the relative capacities and roles of different stakeholders. Policy actions therefore need to be tailored to the specific context and interests. The report elaborates on what governments can do to facilitate and enhance the transfer of Environmentally Sound Technologies, but it also aims at reaching decision makers in the private sector, lending institutions, multilateral agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the interested public.

National Innovation SystemsRichard R. Nelson0195076176The slowdown of growth in Western industrialized nations in the last twenty years has led to what the authors believe to be a "techno-nationalism." This book is about these national systems of technical innovation. The heart of the work contains studies of seventeen countries--from large market-oriented industrialized ones to several smaller high income ones, including a number of newly industrialized states as well. Clearly written, this work highlights institutions and mechanisms which support technical innovation, showing similarities, differences, and their sources across nations, making this work accessible to students as well as the scholars of innovation.

Why sell something you give away for free?  Not everyone uses the Internet and because it provides a means where people, who care, can deliver the vision to their elected officials along with their own written words.  It also provides a means of archiving the idea for future generations.  While the Internet might last forever -
it evolves and so does its content.  This is a way to preserve the concepts for
posterity.

The intent is to share the vision in a way to drive a grass roots awareness of what needs to be done to solve the problems.

This book envisions what a speech would look like implementing the H2Orbit strategy as given by the President of the United States.   The level of attention required and leadership demonstrated.

Think changing a few light bulbs will save the planet? The problem's scope is much broader and deeper than those meager efforts would accomplish.  Those 'meager efforts' are necessary but insufficient. This situation is the single most massive and serious situation ever to face human kind indeed all life on Earth. Solving it will take every bit of 90 years and involve every facet of life on our planet. Ignoring the problem means certain destruction; suicide in god's eye. We must act quickly in the face of an ever narrowing window of opportunity to succeed. This is the text of my proposal made to the President of the United States PRIOR to his delivering the 2007 "State of the Union" address. While I didn't believe for a second it would get much traction, it broached the topic. Find out more about what all this means and what you can do to help.

The Regional Impacts of Climate Change - An Assessment of VulernabilityIntergovernmental Panel on Climate ChangeClick the image to review the reportThis Special Report, which has been produced by Working Group II of the IPCC, builds on the Working Group's contribution to the Second Assessment Report (SAR), and incorporates more recent information made available since mid-1995. It has been prepared in response to a request from the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). It addresses an important question posed by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC, namely, the degree to which human conditions and the natural environment are vulnerable to the potential effects of climate change. The report establishes a common base of information regarding the potential costs and benefits of climatic change, including the evaluation of uncertainties, to help the COP determine what adaptation and mitigation measures might be justified. The report consists of vulnerability assessments for 10 regions that comprise the Earth's entire land surface and adjoining coastal seas: Africa, Arid Western Asia (including the Middle East), Australasia, Europe, Latin America, North America, the Polar Regions (The Arctic and the Antarctic), Small Island States, Temperate Asia, and Tropical Asia. It also includes several annexes that provide information about climate observations, climate projections, vegetation distribution projections, and socioeconomic trends.

Silent SpringRachel Carson 061825305XSilent Spring, released in 1962, offered the first shattering look at widespread ecological degradation and touched off an environmental awareness that still exists. Rachel Carson's book focused on the poisons from insecticides, weed killers, and other common products as well as the use of sprays in agriculture, a practice that led to dangerous chemicals to the food source. Carson argued that those chemicals were more dangerous than radiation and that for the first time in history, humans were exposed to chemicals that stayed in their systems from birth to death.

The Hydrogen EconomyJeremy Rifkin1585421936 Rifkin, president of the Foundation on Economic Trends explains that the next great economic era will be powered by hydrogen. His basic premise is that the world must switch from a fossil-fuel economy to a hydrogen economy. This must happen soon for three reasons: the imminent peak of global oil production, the increased concentration of remaining oil reserves in the Middle East one of the most politically and socially unstable regions of the world and the steady heating up of the world's atmosphere from fossil-fuel dependency.

The Art of WarSun TzuVariousWith well over a million copies sold, Sun Tzu's The Art of War is a true masterpiece, a series of brilliant aphorisms that illuminate the planning and conduct of war. From perceptive descriptions of the nine varieties of terrain, to advice on how to gage an enemy's weaknesses and strengths, to suggestions on the employment of secret agents, here is timeless advice on combat and military strategy. Sun Tzu's writings are unsurpassed in depth of understanding, shedding light not only on battlefield maneuvers, but also on the relevant economic, political, and psychological factors that can shape the outcome of warfare. Equally important, the precepts outlined by Sun Tzu over two thousand years ago can be applied with great success outside the theater of
war. Indeed, it is read avidly by corporate executives worldwide and has been touted in the movie Wall Street and the television series The Sopranos as the ultimate guide to strategy. Remarkable for its clear organization, lucid prose, and the acuity of its intellectual and moral insights, The Art of War is the definitive study of combat. It is an essential book for military history buffs, and ideal for anyone who is interested in tactics and strategy, whether on the battlefield or in the boardroom.
