Currently in various countries, reputable organizations, are carrying out projects in distributed processing.  What does this mean?  Very complex problems, like climate change, require either very large computers for a very long time to process the model under study.  One alternative to this expensive method is to ask for volunteers to allow their computers to process a tiny aspect of the model.  The central computer, on the internet, coordinates task requests to the various computers and in this way litterally thousands of PCs can participate in the project.

Some of the Information Processing sites maintain links to past, present(active) and future distributed projects.  Some are climate oriented, others assist SETI, and yet others are computational in nature.

This approach to processing information though is a good one and can allow average people to help with sophisticated problems we are all trying to solve.  After all - you don't sit at your computer 24 hours a day seven (7) days a week.  When you aren't at your computer - it can be helping to solve a world problem.  Your only decision is which one to help work on....
